Carbon Credits

carbon credit, also known as a carbon offset, is a tradable certificate representing one tonne of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e) that has been reduced, avoided, or removed from the atmosphere. Companies and individuals purchase them to compensate for their greenhouse gas emissions, funding projects like renewable energy or forest protection that reduce or remove emissions elsewhere. These projects are independently audited to verify that the emission reductions are real and permanent.

What a carbon credit represents

  • One tonne of CO2e: A carbon credit is a unit of measurement for one tonne of carbon dioxide or its equivalent greenhouse gas.
  • Emission reduction/removal: Each credit purchased signifies that a corresponding amount of greenhouse gas has been prevented from entering the atmosphere or has been captured from it.
  • Funding for climate projects: The revenue from selling credits is used to fund projects that cut or absorb emissions, such as planting trees, developing renewable energy, or capturing methane from landfills.

How carbon credits work

  • Generation: Projects that reduce or remove emissions, like a solar farm or a reforestation initiative, generate carbon credits.
  • Verification: These projects undergo independent audits to verify that they have achieved the promised emission reductions.
  • Trading: Verified credits are then sold in either a regulated or voluntary market.
  • Offsetting: A company or individual buys credits to offset its own emissions. Once a credit is used to offset emissions, it is retired and can't be sold  again.

Types of carbon credits and projects

  • Renewable energy projects: Generate clean energy from sources like wind, solar, or hydropower.
  • Methane capture projects: Capture potent methane emissions from sources like landfills or oil and gas production and can use the gas as a fuel.
  • Forestry and land use projects: Involve activities like reforestation, afforestation, or avoided deforestation.
  • Carbon removal credits: Specifically generated by projects that sequester carbon in the soil or other methods.
