A carbon register, also known as a carbon registry, is a database that promotes transparency and prevents double counting of carbon credits. It facilitates the issuance, transfer, and retirement of carbon credits generated by climate protection projects.

Functions of a carbon register

Issuance of climate certificates:

Carbon Registers ensure that for every ton of CO2 equivalent saved or avoided through a climate protection project, a corresponding certificate (carbon credit) is issued.

Transparency and accountability:

They offer a transparent overview of the climate protection projects, the certificates issued and their whereabouts (transfer, decommissioning).

Avoiding double counting:

Centralized management and tracking of certificates ensures that a certificate is not used or credited multiple times.

Transfer and decommissioning:

Carbon registers allow the transfer of certificates from one owner to another, as well as the retirement of certificates when they have been used to offset emissions.

Verification and validation:

The projects and the associated certificates are verified and validated before registration in the register to ensure that they meet the quality standards.
